Living in Church Hill, Richmond

Church Hill may be Richmond’s oldest neighborhood, but it’s also one of the city’s most vibrant places to live. Where is Church Hill in Richmond?

As its name suggests, Church Hill is located on a hill overlooking the city of Richmond. In fact, it’s where you’ll find one of the best views in town — from Libby Hill Park. Legend has it that the view of the James River from that very spot reminded Richmond’s founder, William Byrd II, of Richmond upon Thames in England — thus the city’s name was born.

As for the “Church” part of the neighborhood’s name? That comes from the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church, built in 1742. Located in the East End of the city, Church Hill encompasses the St. John’s historic district and sits adjacent to Chimborazo, Fairmount, Union Hill, Woodville, and Peter Paul.
